Title: SMEs powered by High Performance Computing (HPC)

Abstract: It is assumed the gap between the appearance of a new technology, demonstrating its added value and its implementation in an activity. Knowing the difficulty to follow all the innovation, the more delicate is to believe and decide to make an existing solution, legacy. Globalization has brought a vast, new and competitive group of players, many still without references, making difficult and doubtful the effectiveness on the managers’ decision. Managing innovation does not requires a similarSupercomputers or High Performance Computing (HPC) are easily available today, representing an opportunity for companies to improve their competitiveness. HPC allows them to create better products using simulation, to improve the understanding of the manufacturing processes, to take advantage of their data, or to design new models of Deep Learning. This talk will present, using real cases, how SMEs can also use HPC to enhance their business.
 
Shortbio: Dr. Andrés Gómez is PhD on Physics from the University of Santiago de Compostela. Since 1992, he has worked for several companies and institutions of the IT and manufacturing sectors. Since 2001, he is the manager of the Applications and Projects Department at CESGA, the supercomputing centre of Galicia, Spain. In this institution, he is promoting the usage of HPC by SMEs in several areas as simulation or Deep Learning, leading some Portugal-Galicia projects as CloudPYME or participating in the I4MS European project FORTISSIMO, one of the largest initiative in Europe for providing HPC resources to SMEs, where he is member of the Project Board (represening CESGA) and of the Project Executive Committe. He is author of more than 60 technical papers in journals and conferences and one book about HPC and industry.

Title: Open Innovation: a strategy for SMEs

Speaker: Prof. Isabel Ramos, University of Minho, Portugal
Abstract: Innovation has become a key success factor for economic development and a prerequisite for sustainable development. In a complex and highly competitive global environment, enterprises have to innovate and develop commercially viable products and services faster than ever before. The lecture reviews applications of open innovation concepts and strategies for SMEs development by accommodating theoretical perspectives and case studies. Diverse aspects of open innovation in terms of policy, politics, economy, and culture, making it a useful reference for researchers, practitioners, and academics are covered .
 
Shortbio: Prof. Isabel Ramos Isabel Ramos is an Associate Professor at Information Systems Department of University of Minho, Portugal. She is Chair of the Doctoral Program in Information Systems and Technology and the President of the Portuguese Chapter of the AIS. She Leads (or lead) the University of Minho participation in several projects funded by FP7, ERASMUS+, Horizon 2020, companies or the public administration in Portugal. Isabel Ramos is Secretary and National Representative at the IFIP – International Federation for Information Systems, Technical Committee 8 (Information Systems). She was awarded with the Oustanding Service Award e Silver Core Award of IFIP. Her research and teaching interests include: requirements engineering, knowledge management, organizational theory, sociology of knowledge, history of science, research methodology and open innovation. Isabel Ramos is author of more than 150 scientific papers presented at international conferences or published in scientific and technical journals. She advises the work of several PhD and Master students.
